WHAT IS AN ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON?

The terms in the name describe the area in which we work.The oral cavity or mouth is the location of the teeth, the tongue and soft tissues lining the mouth.The maxillae is a term to describe the upper jaw but can also refer to the lower jaw as well.Because our procedures involve the wider area of the eye cavities, nose and cheek bones, the term facial is also applicable.

An Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon is a licensed dentist who receives up to 6 additional years of training in medicine and the surgical arts.This training includes hospital based training and clinical office practice.Because of the necessity to provide general anesthesia on an outpatient basis as a part of our practice, training also includes extensive training in the administration of general anesthesia both in the hospital and office.
